L'shanah tovah

The date on today's post is wrong -- at least for some readers. For Jews, today is 1 Tishri 5768. To those readers, if you don't mind a greeting from a good Catholic boy, Happy New Year.

Image from Newsday.

Today also marks the beginning of fasting for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. This doesn't happen that often -- but it is the third time in a row that these holy days have coincided.

Almost makes you think that Someone wants to remind us that Christians, Jews and Muslims alike are all children of Abraham and therefore family -- and, therefore, we should get along better: Not one dominating another, just all living side by side. In peace. And tolerance. And freedom.

Amen.

Like one big family, eh? What family do you know that gets along all the time? :-)

If your goal is that is that folk of different religious beliefs get along and live in peace, might I suggest that the different religions be more like different divisions under one big corporate umbrella (a.k.a the many children of Abraham). Coworkers are much more civil to each other than siblings are.

A lovely thought for the day Curmudgeon!

You know what I've been wondering for a while now? Why don't Catholics (or all Christians for that matter) celebrate/observe Jewish holidays or holy days?

They're part of our religion as well. I distinctly remember Freshman year of my all-girl Catholic high school (yes I remember that far back!) Sister Regina Claire taught us all about the Old Testament where all these events our Jewish brethren obseve are described.
