Laboring in the obscurity he so richly deserves for over a decade now, your crusty correspondent sporadically offers his views on family, law, politics and money. Nothing herein should be taken too seriously: If you look closely, you can almost see the twinkle in Curmudgeon's eye. Or is that a cataract?

As a service to our insect-loving readers....
Herewith a link to Cicada Mania, a site devoted to all things cicada, including the 17-year variety.

And here in Lee County, I've yet to hear OR see a single cicada. Maybe I'm too far south. I'm kind of glad, I freak out if a June bug bumbles into me, I don't think I'd take well to crunching sounds underfoot... Sorry for the long silence, and lack of comments, things have been kinda hectic. Holidays bring out the worst in retail, and Chris is on unrelenting overtime, which explains the lack of posts over at his blog.
Shelly -- cicada distribution seems to be hit and miss. I saw something on the news the other day that claimed 70% of folks in the Chicago area had yet to see one. During the last emergence, we lived on the other side of the parish -- and we had no bugs -- whereas our current location was swarming with them, just as it is now.
Sharon, Tom McNamee of the Sun-Times did a look back at coverage of past emergences -- from it's files, last time out was a big circus, but it wasn't much in the news 34 years ago. Here's a link to his column. You may find it interesting.

I am old enough to have seen several cicada emergences but I don't recall ever seeing all this excitment about them. What is going on?
