A couple of minor thoughts about sports -- puffed up with big pictures

Bee, every now and again I just have to do sports. It's a guy thing.

Bengals 45, Bears 10. If NFL football were trial by combat, the Bears would be guilty, guilty, guilty of everything Cedric Benson ever charged, or dreamed of charging.

Now that the Yankees are safely back in the World Series, can the umpires go back to being impartial?

I mean, seriously, if this were the NBA playoffs the conspiracy theorists would be having a field day.

Although I'll be rooting for the Phillies, the Yankees will probably win the Series -- and I won't feel guilty anymore for hating them.

Bee, they did indeed win the pennant, a left over word from decades ago before there was a National and an American league. Curmudgeon will explain further if you wish, I'm sure.

Sorry Bee, I think I told you wrong. They won the American League pennant, the Phillies won the senior (National) league pennant; but, I don't know that the "pennant" predates the start of the junior (American) league. Curmudgeon, did I get senior and junior right?

A pennant is just a triangular flag. In baseball it is the prize bestowed on both the American and National League champions. Thus, the Yankees and the Phils are this year's pennant winners. Today, one might hear talk of a team winning the Central Division Pennant... but that's not strictly correct.

The National League is the "Senior Circuit" because it's been around longer. The American League was the AFL of its day, starting up in 1900 to compete with the established league.

Wish baseball was shown at good hours over here.
