My computer has slowed to a crawl

I know things are supposed to get slower in the Summertime... but computers?

Loading a page takes............f..o..r..e..v..e..r........ and leaving a comment?

Almost out of the question. Can't. get. the. comment. window. open.

It's like it's stuck.

Maybe it wasn't a good idea to use WD-40 on it to try and force it open. Could that be why the computer's so slow?

For awhile there I was blaming it on these animated ads that pop up on Yahoo! and Sitemeter and such. Ads that would be animated........if....... they...... ever..... finished............. loading...........

I may try again later.

But, for now, visit Nurse Ratched's Place and find out just why Darth Vader went wrong.

No, really.

Or, you could read about Detroit Tiger Brandon Inge's freak injury.... from a pillow.

If you could get those pages to load, that is.................

I will assume the you are using something other than a dial-up connection.

First, if you are using IE, switch over Mozilla Firefox as a browser. It's free!

If you haven't done so, you may also want to download Spy Bot (also free) to clean out some of the trash files that will slow you down.

Last if all else fails increase your RAM - it's cheap!

Thanks for turning me on to Nurse Ratched's Place!

My computer likes to play slow as well. It may well be full of old files.

I heartliy agree with the Firefox suggestion above. Recently had a similar problem & it turned out to be a line problem on the DSL. A repair guy came out and there was some improvement. May be worth a call.

I've enjoyed reading your blog - thanks for your hard work!

+1 on the Firefox idea; you won't regret it. +1 also on Spybot which can be found at www.safer-networking.org. In addition, I recommend something called Ad-Aware (http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php); my experience has been that Ad-Aware and Spybot work best in tandem (one catches stuff the other doesn't). Also, it's a good idea to defrag your hard drive...don't worry, it's not as painful as it sounds and (contrary to popular belief) you don't need any special software or expertise for it. Hit Start, right-click on My Computer, and select "Manage". A window titled "Computer Management" will open; on the left side will be System Tools, Storage, and Services and Applications. Under Storage (hit the "+" sign next to it to expand it if you have to), double-click on "Disk Defragmenter". When that window opens, just hit the "Defragment" button and run up to the local Starbucks; it should be done by the time you get back. I do advise patience when downloading AVG and Ad-Aware though; their servers are painfully slow lately-

Firefox plus you might need a Spyware blocker. E-mail me and I can point you to some freeware. You'll be surprised at how many sites you visit will stick you with spyware when you visit (ESPN, Yahoo, Google, and CNN are notorious).

ok, so here's a link to a post that I just thought you'd get a kick out of - Today's Million Dollar Idea (and I don't think Al Gore has proclaimed he thought of it first):

I don't know how to make this a hyper link.

Don't think it'll help your slow computer, but ...

I've used Firefox for awhile. Thank you for the suggestions about spyware. Ben's comment was particularly interesting -- I'd been on a whole bunch of Time.com pages looking up stuff about the 1973-74 Arab Oil Embargo when things started really, really slowing down.

That's a shame because, as I said at the end of that post, that site's a great resource... but if you have to worry about it clogging up the computer, what good is it?

A restart seems to have helped, too. Why is that?
