Today Chicago acquires the dubious distinction of having the highest sales tax rate in the United Stated -- 10.25%.
As merchants in Cook County -- especially those situated near the county's borders -- will soon be reminded, the power to tax is indeed the power to destroy.

10.25%...local? On top of the state sales tax and other 'revenue enhancements'???
Even at $4.00+ regular, it might pay to drive a bit to avoid.
Hate to think how confiscatory those Chicago property taxes are...

Ralph -- it's not quite as bad as that... it's 10.25% in the aggregate... all state, county and city taxes adding up to that extraordinary total in the City of Chicago. Many suburbs set their own sales tax rates and none of them are as high as the City's -- which is why Chicago's new rate stacks up as the highest in the nation. But, for example, it's now 10% in Schaumburg (home of the Woodfield Mall) and Skokie and 9.75% in Orland Park.
